High School Football: Hornets 42, Lancers 6

COLONY — Crest High’s struggles continued Friday, as untimely penalties and Chetopa’s passing game keyed a 42-6 setback to the previously winless Hornets.

The loss drops the Lancers to 0-6 on the season.

The outmanned Crest squad lost two touchdowns due to holding penalties, a 60-yard kickoff return by Tayton Driskel, and a 61-yard Driskel run.

Meanwhile, Chetopa’s Col-ten Vanatta tossed a pair of first-half touchdown passes, and set up another score on a key fourth-town toss as the Hornets took a 28-0 lead late into the second quarter.

Things soured from there for Crest, which marched to the Chetopa 1, but saw a fourth-down rush lose yardage, giving the ball back to the Hornets.

Two plays later, Chetopa’s Gabe Johnson rumbled through the Crest defense for a 70-yard touchdown jaunt to push the lead to 36-0 at the break.

The scoring slowed in the second half.

Chetopa’s only score came when the Hornets blocked a Crest punt, and Kade Hoppock fell on the ball in the end zone, pushing the lead to 42-0.

Crest avoided the shutout with a 10-play, 46-yard drive, capped by a 12-yard Kanon Coberly touchdown run late in the game.

The Lancers travel to Southern Coffey County next Friday.
